… I’m pretty certain the only reason Nat Turner wouldn’t be considered Racist these days is because people tend to use the sociological definition instead of the person-level definition. I mean, he DID lead people to murder men, women and children as long as they were white.

I mean, the shit that happened to him was entirely horrible and no human deserved to go through it but… He WAS a racist.

al-capussy

nat turner was racist again white people. nat turner, who led a slave rebellion, was racist against white people.

y'all are trippin.

cookingwithroxy

Yeah!

Listen, if it was ‘Nat Turner lead his people, killing all the white men along their path’ I would not say ‘Racist’. Because, after all, we’d be talking about threats and combatants.

When you include the killing of women and children tho…

I’m not saying that a slave rebellion was unjustified. Fucking HELL it was very much justified. And fuck, I’m not even saying that killing women was the terrible thing, because we all know that women are as capable of terrible violence and racism as men are.

But when you’re killing all the CHILDREN, then I’m giving you a closer look.

If your thought is ‘Kill the babies because they’re white’ then I’m gonna ask about your motives.

al-capussy

so just for clarifications sake:

youre telling me. nat turner, a slave, was racist. against white people.

cookingwithroxy

That I have to do this is horrible. I hate ‘Dictionary definition’ as an argument.

Racism. Noun. As defined by Google. (also, Merriam-Webster’s definition if you want a different source as well.)

1)  prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.

2)  the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

This is why I also noted ‘… Nat Turner wouldn’t be considered Racist these days is because people tend to use the sociological definition instead of the person-level definition.’

Racism. Is the hate. Of someone. Because of the color of their skin, or their ethnic grouping.

The ‘Power + Privilege’ definition was designed around the concept of GROUPS functioning against other GROUPS. Without power and privilege, one cannot create INSTITUTIONAL Racism. Like, the shit REAGAN did, that’s Institutional Racism, shit that hurt black people for generations by putting legislation in effect that would keep inner city poverty strong and hinder the black community escaping it’s effects. That’s Power and Privilege used to establish an Institutionalized Racist System. It was maintained by willful ignorance on the behalf of white people, choosing to ignore the tragedies their behavior allowed.

But on the INDIVIDUAL level, power and privilege means NOTHING. There you have to be judged not by the effects of public policy, but on what you ACTUALLY FUCKING BELIEVE.

I hate white nationalists, not because I think they’ll get in charge of the Chicago City Council, but because they fucking hate people based on the color of their skin. It’s all I fucking need to hate those racist fuckbags.

al-capussy

i just wanna make sure we’re on the same page.

you think that nat turner, a slave, leader of a slave rebellion, who was a slave, and hated white people because he was. a slave. is the same as a white person who hates black people because we’re black.

i hope you realize what a fool you’re making of yourself right now. just. i hope you realize.

cookingwithroxy

Listen, I’m not saying he didn’t have a LOT of justification for his hate. For fucks sake of COURSE he had justification for his hate! He was a slave in the south during honestly the worst time in american history! We were HORRIBLE people at that time, and I’m really fucking glad not to live back then!

BUT! Racism is not defined by your MOTIVE. It’s defined by your BELIEFS.

Do you think that a survivor from Nanking should be allowed to call for the death of all Japanese people? And no, I’m not trying to divert jack shit, I’m trying to point out the logical path here.

No, shit, fuck it. I’ll just ask this instead.

Did Nat Turner’s beliefs fit the definition for racism? Nothing else matters, does it FIT THE DEFINITION.

‘cause if the answer is ‘Yes, BUT!’ then the answer is just Yes.

al-capussy

slaves who hated the white people who enslaved them were racist.

cookingwithroxy

If they hated them because they were White.

Like, that’s the thing. If they hated them because they were abusive slave owners, then no. Not racist at all.

Slave owners! that’s something to hate!

But if they hated them because of the color of their SKIN, if they killed other people because they had the same skin color of the people who had abused and tortured them?

Then it’s… no longer about punishing the people who hurt you, it’s about punishing people who look LIKE the people who hurt you.

Like, okay. trying again to get through to you. If you got beaten by A woman, or even by multiple women, you could be justified in hating THOSE WOMEN.

But if you decide from that experience that you hate ALL women, that ALL women would automatically hit you or deserve to be punished for the crimes of those women who hurt you, you’d be a sexist fuckshit.

Because there’s a difference between hating those who hurt you, and hating those only loosely related to those who hurt you.

So. Do you think Nat Turner was justified in allowing his revolt to murder children or not? Do you think it was motivated by their desire to hurt ANY white people who came across their path?

al-capussy

yeah.

cookingwithroxy

Congratulations. You just admitted it was racism. Meanwhile, I proved he wasn’t racist by looking up more details on Wikipedia and finding he wanted to avoid attacking poor white households. Thus proving he wasn’t motivated by racism and that I’ve been wrong this entire fucking time.

I WAS FUCKING WRONG.

I WAS VERY FUCKING WRONG.

NAT TURNER WAS NOT A RACIST AND I WAS STUPID TO CALL HIM ONE.

But you could have presented that to me and proved it so quickly, instead of having an argument over what racism IS.

It’s still one of those things where he hated white people, but not universally, so he probably was motivated by anger rather than hate and I wouldn’t consider him racist.

Ugh. This is a fucking shitshow.

al-capussy

yeah.
